Advanced: Superlatives

Adjectives that express the maximum superiority of something.

Al igual que los comparativos, se pueden formar de varias formas:

1. Cuando el adjetivo tiene una sílaba, se añade EST al final y utilizas el artículo THE antes del mismo:

Examples:       clean – the cleanest

                        strong – the strongest

                        great – the greatest

2. Cuando el adjetivo tiene tres o más sílabas, usamos THE MOST antes del mismo:

Examples:      comfortable – the most comfortable

                        intelligent – the most intelligent

3. Cuando el adjetivo tiene dos sílabas, al igual que los comparativos, se pueden formar de ambas maneras, ya sea con EST o con THE MOST:

Example:       clever – the cleverest – the most clever

IMPORTANT: No se usa THAN con los superlativos ya que son superior a todo y no comparables con nada.

***Al igual que en los comparativos tenemos reglas ortograficas adicionales:

• Cuando el adjetivo tiene una o dos sílabas y acaba en Y, la misma se cambia por I+EST:

Examples:       dry – the driest

                        dirty – the dirtiest

• Cuando el adjetivo tiene una o dos sílabas y acaba en E, le añades ST para completar el EST:

Examples:      simple – the simplest

                        pure – the purest

• Cuando el adjetivo es corto y acaba en consonante y esta es procedida por una sola vocal, repetimos la consonante y añadimos EST:

Examples:       big – the biggest

                        thin – the thinnest

Formas Irregulares

Como siempre, tiene que haber algunas formas irregulares que simplemente tendremos que aprender en el camino:

Examples:       good – the best

                        bad – the worst

                        far – the furthest / the farthest

Inferioridad Superlativa

Para expresar una inferioridad superlativa, utilizamos la palabra LEAST con el artículo THE anterior al adjetivo:

Examples:       John Robertson is the least popular person in my school.

                        The Ford Fiesta is the least expensive Ford you can buy.
